Interesting Night!!!

Hello all. First off let me say that musically this weekend was truly unbelievable. Michael Blake is a true gentleman and an absolutely wonderfully melodic and creative voice on the tenor saxophone. He plays very unique lines and really gets involved in the tunes he plays. A gorgeous version so Speak Low, Bayou (a Monk Tune) and a gorgeous orginal were all highlights of last night. Ross Taggart took a piano solo on this up tune that was remarkable. Its was burning as I like to say. The crowd loved it and the place was packed which was great!!!!

On to the interesting part of the evening. A singer came to the club who shall remain nameless. An african american woman. Her race at this point is not important but it will be in a few minutes so bare with me. This is a woman that has pestered me for a gig 4 years. Despite my polite attempts to tell her that I have received a package and if something comes up I would call. I also have explained that The Cellar is primarily an instrumental room, no because I don't like singers but because there are many more vocal rooms than there are instrumental rooms. Im prould that The Cellar lets musicians play what they want and how loud they want to play it. This woman seems to think that because she recorded with Duke Ellington (HORRIBLY OUT OF FREAKING TUNE) that she come in and drop names and just be handed gigs. She barged her way in without a reservation last night, accosted my sister and proceeded to tell other customers how bad the service at The Cellar is. This natually got me quite upset. I let her have two freebies (jabs) and then the third one I was going to come over. She luckily quieted down and we managed to get all the people that she had butted in front of in so all was good. During the last set in between one of the tunes she yelled out "let a soul sister get up and sing." Highly inappropriate of course but the crowd just kind of laughed and that was that. Then Michael Blake very eloquently stated that "us saxophone players often don't need vocalist because our instruments our vocalists." The crowd cheered and that was the end of that. At the end of the night the vibe was great. Everyone had a great night and were all very happy. I just happened to be in my office writing cheques for the guys and in walks this woman. I said "excuse me! What are you doing in here?" to which she replied "Im using your phone." Cory - "Well first of all you ask me to use my phone, secondly you don't ever barge into my office unannounced or univited, this is a place of business and for employess. To my knowledge you have never worked at The Cellar." This woman then proceed to call me and I quote "an arrogant, white, racist, bastard!" I said that I agreed that at times I can come across as arrogant, I'm definitely white and I can be a bastard sometimes but the racist part confused me and got me quite fired up. Its an interesting position to be with and one that needs to be handled somewhat carefully. I mean I'm a white, heterosexual male. My sister has made me realized that Im the most priveliged person around. I haven't had to deal with much of anything and I certainly haven't had to deal with the things that this woman has had to deal with in her lifetime. She accused me of never hiring black musicians and that "her people" were the ones that started this music. At this point I was tired and very angry. I slammed down the Charles McPherson CD, The Tilde Webb CD with FATHEAD, The Dr. Lonnie Smith CD, told her to look at my bartender (she is african american) and then listed off the names of Benny Golson, Gary Bartz, Denzal Sinclaire, Quincy Davie, Herlin Riley, Red Holloway, Mulgrew Miller etc. You get the picture. Her response was "they have all played here?" This shows you how much she has supported the club. She then proceeded to push me and walk out of office. I followed her so I could assure that she would leave. She then swore at me in front of the customers and I simply opened the door and told her she was never welcome at The Cellar ever again. A first in five years. Someone has been officially banned from The Cellar.

Im much calmer now and as I type this Jay Clayton is singing beautifully with Miles Black at the club!!!

I took a trip down to Seattle yesterday to see my good friend Ian Hendrickson-Smith play with a great Funk/Soul band called Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings. What a killing band. I left early in the day because whenever I go to Seattle I like to peruse Tower Records as well as some used book stores. I have really been in to vinyl lately and to be honest with you I haven't been listening to CD's much. The sound of vinyl is unexplainable other than to say it is simply better. I also have to admit I get caught up in the notalgia of picking up that big colourful album cover. Its also very funny to see the turntable coming back. I was golfing with a friend the other day and his 17 year old daughter asked him for a turnbable for her birthday. Hilarious. Please tell me the 8 - track isn't going to come back!!! Anyways, my time at Tower Records was awesome. So superior to anything that we have up here and its sad that the record stores in this city continue to slowly phase out their jazz section. It seems at A&B Sound they have the same stuff they had last year. Virgin has a much better selection but their way of racking CD's suck and its an understatement to say they're over-priced. Some of the smaller shops offer that cool ambience of a record store but their selection is often limited and you have to special order. For those of you who don't know me I'm not a patient man so ordering isn't good for me. Unless of course I'm ordering vinyl on ebay (I'm addicted).

There is an incredible book store down there as well call The Elliot Bay Book company just up the street from Bud's Jazz Records (an instituion in Seattle). What a great store. I never really buy much from there but to hang out there is so much fun.

I finally purchased Joe Henderson "Live in Tokyo." I had heard snipets of it here and there but finally found a copy at Tower. Holy Crap!!! What an amazing display of saxophone work and group work all around. The Japanese rhythm section virtually made up of unknown were obviously thrilled to be playing with the tenor man. They were so enthusiastic, rushing heavily at times and almost exploding and losing it all together but Joe just when with them and played his ass off. The band swung hard but as I said it was a little scattered at times. If you're a Joe Henderson fan or high energy jazz fan, you have to check it out.

My recording experience isn't extensive but I have generally never ever been happy recording anything in the studio that I have liked. The studio for me is very confining and I don't find it a very creative space or atmosphere. I have realized that there is nothing like a live record. Bill Evans at the Vanguard, Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall, Trane at the Vanguard, Wes Montgomery at Tsubo, the recent Chris Potter record at the Vanguard, Trane at The Vanguard...so many great recordings of masters playing music live and unencumbered by the confines of a studio.

Thats it for now.

A Fun Weekend

For those of you who missed out on the events this weekend. Shame on you! Just kidding but you did miss two nights of superb playing by UGETSU. Ross Taggart on piano, Andre Lachance on bass, Brad Turner on trumpet and flugelhorn, Rod Murray on trombone, Jon Bentley on tenor sax and Bernie Arai on drums. These guys worked hard at writing some originals and arranging them for sextet as well as playing some classic tunes penned by members of Art Blakey's Band. The concept for this group is based around the album that Blakey's Messengers did I belive in the late 50's early 60's call Ugetsu. The band tore it up. Friday was a bit tentative in terms of the tunes and arrangements but the solos were burning. Saturday night it all fell into place with the band being overall more confident about everything. We got it all on tape will hopefully be releasing it on Cellar Live in the coming months.

Our first High School Combo all star Sunday afternoon started this weekend and for all concerned it was a success. All 3 bands sounded wonderful and the future of jazz is in good hands as far as I can hear. This event will be taking place one Sunday every month starting in September. So look for it on our calendar.

Speaking of Cellar Live the long anticipated arrival of The Tilden Webb Trio with Special Guest David 'Fathead' Newman will be early this week. So log onto to www.cellarlive.com to order it or come to the club.

Speaking of Cellar Live, lots of cool happenings!! The last recording ever of the late great pianist Linton Garner is hopefully going to put out soon. Linton was joined by tenor saxophonist Ross Taggart and bassist Russ Botten. Recorded a few years ago, Linton's health was noticeably detriorating but his graciousness and playing were simply put: BEAUTIFUL. More information on this release to appear soon on our website.

Talk to you later.

Some random thoughts

Hello all, long time no blog.. I have finally recovered from a 4 night tour with Dr. Lonnie Smith. We played to packed rooms in Vancouver (Ironworks), Nelson (L.V. Rogers Secondary), Calgary (Quincy's) and Edmonton (Yardbird Suite). Now four days on the road does not sound like much but we had to drive from Calgary to Nelson (7 hours) play, wake up 630 am and drive 10 hours to Edmonton. Not to mention that when you play with Dr. Lonnie Smith its a really physically and mentally exhausting. In a good way of course. For me he just brings this other side out and I can't really explain how he does it or why it occurs but I LOVE IT....

The sunny days are here and its frustrating but I love it as well. People just don't want to come to the basement on a sunny night. Heck, I don't even want to come in. I'm putting out the plea now. Please don't stop coming in the summer!! These are the months that make or break our year and we really need to try to have a good May, June and August (we're closed for 3 weeks).

Reno plans are still happening. We have gotten financial approval but are awaiting city approval which is just a formality really but we're on a tight time line so thats what we're waiting for.

Some great concert announcements to!! PJ PERRY / BOBBY SHEW QUINTET CD RELASE party. The CD was recorded over 5 sessions at the club and has been eagerly awaited by jazz fans. This is going to be a killer three nights. August 12th,13th and 14th. this will also mark our 5 year anniversary. We are going to have prizes galore so make sure you make your reservations.

Cellar Live is really exciting me at the moment. We have just released four new records that are all wonderful. James Danderfer Group "Run With It" is getting incredible reviews and lots of airplay, Chad Makela Quartet "Flicker" is a wonderfully creative album. Oliver Gannon "That's What" is yet another fabulous outing by this underrated local guitarist. TILDEN WEBB TRIO: CELLAR GROOVE with special guest David Fathead Newman will be available on May 16th. If you want your copy quicker than everyone else go to www.cellarlive.com and order it. If you order two or more records off the site you get a compilation CD. A disc that I'm really excited about is THE UPTOWN QUINTET: Live in New York. This session if some of the best hard bop I have heard in a long time. It features Ryan Kisor on trumpet (Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra), alto saxophonist Ian Hendrickson - Smith (Mingus Big Band, Eddie Henderson) and pianist Spike Wilner. You can order this CD now off our website and it will be available shipping in the first week of June.

Thats it for now!!!
