Some random thoughts
Hello all, long time no blog.. I have finally recovered from a 4 night tour with Dr. Lonnie Smith. We played to packed rooms in Vancouver (Ironworks), Nelson (L.V. Rogers Secondary), Calgary (Quincy's) and Edmonton (Yardbird Suite). Now four days on the road does not sound like much but we had to drive from Calgary to Nelson (7 hours) play, wake up 630 am and drive 10 hours to Edmonton. Not to mention that when you play with Dr. Lonnie Smith its a really physically and mentally exhausting. In a good way of course. For me he just brings this other side out and I can't really explain how he does it or why it occurs but I LOVE IT....
The sunny days are here and its frustrating but I love it as well. People just don't want to come to the basement on a sunny night. Heck, I don't even want to come in. I'm putting out the plea now. Please don't stop coming in the summer!! These are the months that make or break our year and we really need to try to have a good May, June and August (we're closed for 3 weeks).
Reno plans are still happening. We have gotten financial approval but are awaiting city approval which is just a formality really but we're on a tight time line so thats what we're waiting for.
Some great concert announcements to!! PJ PERRY / BOBBY SHEW QUINTET CD RELASE party. The CD was recorded over 5 sessions at the club and has been eagerly awaited by jazz fans. This is going to be a killer three nights. August 12th,13th and 14th. this will also mark our 5 year anniversary. We are going to have prizes galore so make sure you make your reservations.
Cellar Live is really exciting me at the moment. We have just released four new records that are all wonderful. James Danderfer Group "Run With It" is getting incredible reviews and lots of airplay, Chad Makela Quartet "Flicker" is a wonderfully creative album. Oliver Gannon "That's What" is yet another fabulous outing by this underrated local guitarist. TILDEN WEBB TRIO: CELLAR GROOVE with special guest David Fathead Newman will be available on May 16th. If you want your copy quicker than everyone else go to www.cellarlive.com and order it. If you order two or more records off the site you get a compilation CD. A disc that I'm really excited about is THE UPTOWN QUINTET: Live in New York. This session if some of the best hard bop I have heard in a long time. It features Ryan Kisor on trumpet (Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra), alto saxophonist Ian Hendrickson - Smith (Mingus Big Band, Eddie Henderson) and pianist Spike Wilner. You can order this CD now off our website and it will be available shipping in the first week of June.
Thats it for now!!!
