A Fun Weekend

For those of you who missed out on the events this weekend. Shame on you! Just kidding but you did miss two nights of superb playing by UGETSU. Ross Taggart on piano, Andre Lachance on bass, Brad Turner on trumpet and flugelhorn, Rod Murray on trombone, Jon Bentley on tenor sax and Bernie Arai on drums. These guys worked hard at writing some originals and arranging them for sextet as well as playing some classic tunes penned by members of Art Blakey's Band. The concept for this group is based around the album that Blakey's Messengers did I belive in the late 50's early 60's call Ugetsu. The band tore it up. Friday was a bit tentative in terms of the tunes and arrangements but the solos were burning. Saturday night it all fell into place with the band being overall more confident about everything. We got it all on tape will hopefully be releasing it on Cellar Live in the coming months.

Our first High School Combo all star Sunday afternoon started this weekend and for all concerned it was a success. All 3 bands sounded wonderful and the future of jazz is in good hands as far as I can hear. This event will be taking place one Sunday every month starting in September. So look for it on our calendar.

Speaking of Cellar Live the long anticipated arrival of The Tilden Webb Trio with Special Guest David 'Fathead' Newman will be early this week. So log onto to www.cellarlive.com to order it or come to the club.

Speaking of Cellar Live, lots of cool happenings!! The last recording ever of the late great pianist Linton Garner is hopefully going to put out soon. Linton was joined by tenor saxophonist Ross Taggart and bassist Russ Botten. Recorded a few years ago, Linton's health was noticeably detriorating but his graciousness and playing were simply put: BEAUTIFUL. More information on this release to appear soon on our website.

Talk to you later.
